Ernest Yaw Anim from NPP triumphs with a resounding win in the Kumawu by-election

Ernest Yaw Anim, representing the New Patriotic Party, has achieved a resounding triumph in the Kumawu by-election. After a fiercely contested race between the NPP and NDC, the recently concluded polls have declared him the winner. With unwavering support from the party, Ernest Yaw Anim has secured the parliamentary seat and earned the trust and confidence of the electorate.

The seat became vacant following the death of the late member of parliament for the constituency Philip Basoah. His death created a power vacuum and by the constitution of Ghana, the EC must conduct a by-election to fill the position.

People had higher expectations that the election will be highly competitive since both parties had higher stakes. The current ruling party NPP and the major opposition party NDC ran viciously to gain the Kumawu parliamentary seat.

The NDC presented Kwasi Amankwaa as their candidate who came second with about 17.29% representing 3,727 with the ruling party candidate Ernest Yaw Anim obtaining 70.91 representing 15,264.

The results are summarized below:

Kumawu was crawling with police during the elections because of the fear that things might go bad and lead to violence because of the nature of Ghana’s elections in the past.

Although there was a heavy police presence, the elections were highly peaceful than expected throughout all the polling stations.

This election was supposed to be a game-changer for both parties.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has won the Kumawu parliamentary seat since 2000 and they could not give away their stronghold to the opposition party NDC.

During the elections, the constituency saw prominent politicians from the party like Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and other presidential candidates like Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto and Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten.

Before the results were declared, there was a signed pink sheet trending online but the Electoral Commission classified the pink sheet as a fake.

The opposition also accused the ruling party of engaging in vote buying but these allegations of vote buying were denied.

Just a few hours before the official results were announced, Mustapha Gbande, the NDC’s deputy general secretary, said that the government had engaged in widespread vote buying.

Among other election malpractice were those that encouraged some voters to snap images of their votes proving they had chosen the NPP candidate in exchange for a sum between GHC 50 and GHC 100 the NDC general secretary claimed.
