MTN Ghana breaks silence on controversial suspension of Data Zone Promo

The MTN Zone bundle offers a predetermined number of minutes for a set price and can be purchased through the MTN network. However, on Wednesday, April 05, 2023, MTN Ghana suspended its innovative Data Zone bundle, which gives customers a 1-day validity bundle at discounted rates at the point of purchase. The telecom giant issued an apology to its customers for limiting communication on this subject to service activation channels exclusively. The suspension was the result of a review of the bundle offer in accordance with the Significant Market Power (SMP) directives issued to MTN Ghana in June 2020.
Customers of MTN Ghana were reassured that the company was presently coordinating and engaging with the regulator to seek agreement on a new Data Zone package that would be quickly reintroduced. The company also promised to notify its customers of further developments in due course.
In a press release by MTN Ghana on Wednesday, April 12, they apologized to the general public for the inconvenience caused stating “to our cherished customers for limiting our communications on this matter to service activation channels only.” MTN network users were assured that they will continue to provide innovative and affordable products and services that are beneficial to them.
MTN Ghana in their press release promised their Ghanaian based customers that they are currently working hard and would continue to roll out innovative and affordable products and services for their benefit because the Data Zone package, which was the cheapest offer in the market is currently suspended following examining to meet the SMP directives.
In conclusion, we would say that MTN Zone which allowed its users to make calls and send text messages at discounted rates depending on their location and the time of day and even enjoy lower rates during certain periods of the day has really helped many Ghanaians.
The suspension of the innovative Data Zone bundle in Ghana which was due to a review of the offer in line with the SMP directives to MTN Ghana has really affected many Ghanaians and has been the subject of discussion since last week.
Therefore, MTN has informed its consumers that it is working with the regulator to find consensus on a new Data Zone package that would be reintroduced as soon as possible.
