Sad News Hit Mobile Money Users
Mobile money is widely used by many Ghanaians for businesses and other financial transactions. It has emerged that it is the well accepted digital means of payment in the country currently. According to research done by Research team of Stanbic Bank, the subscribers of the service increased by 15% in 2020 with an estimated amount of GHC589.
The government therefore see it as necessary means to tax the subscribers to be able to implement good programs for the country. It suggested of imposing electronic levy of 1.75% of every subscriber who sends money above Ghc100.
The budget statement sparked a lot of rejections of many Ghanaians who claim there is a lot of economic hardships in the country. The minority in parliament out rightly rejected the budget due to the e-levy component and others in the budget.
The mobile money agent’s association of Ghana (MMAAG) have released a communique to instruct their subscribers and their agents nationwide to lay down their tools. They are showing a displeasure of the government e-levy of 1.75% describing it as regressive. And the survival of their business is at stake and may collapse if they accept the tax imposition.
As part of their demonstration, the service will not be accessible on Thursday December 23, 2021. All mobile money agent across the country will not be at post of the said date. All their agents will go on strike and the entire outlets will remain closed. They further elaborated that their actions will be indefinite if actions are not taken by the government to listen to their cry.
